14. For the post of Principal of the Chinese School I should

prefer a Chinese Scholar of the status of Dr. Hu Shih. If we en-

gage such a man, I do not see how we could offer him less than the

salary of a Professor $8,000-250-10,000 a year plus a house allow

ance of $2,400.

The two senior lecturers would be Dr. Lai and Dr.

Âu. They are at present in receipt of salaries of $500 or $6,000

2 year. They are both old men and can quite well continue to draw

these salaries until their retirements. I do not consider that

there is any occasion to provide either Dr. Lai or Dr. Au with a

house allowance. Indeed the principle which should, I think, be

applied to the provision of free accommodation or an allowance in

lieu thereof is that these privileges should ordinarily be confined

to those recruited in England. As English lecturers I should try

and engage young Chinose who had passed successfully through Brit-

ish Universities' courses. I understand that Mr. A. E. Vood knows

of two such at the present moment. If such men can be recruited,

it will be necessary to pay to each the salary of a University

Iceturor 4,500-20-5,500-25-6,000 a year. But I do not think it

necessary to provide cither of those lecturers with a house allow-

anco. For a suitable scale of pay for a Chinese Lecturer I suggest

$3,000-100-3,600 a year without any house allowance. The same

scale of pay would I think be suitable for the Translators, but

Kr. Lâm Tung who before coming back to the University had some

useful experience in the Education Department of the Federated

Malay States is now drawing $300. I suggest that Mr. Lam Tung
